Milwaukee School of Engineering is Hiring a Laboratory Technician Near Milwaukee, WI

Summary
Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time Laboratory Technician to join our Fluid Power Institute team. The Laboratory Technician provides support for both billable and overhead projects conducted by faculty, students and industry in the Fluid Power Institute’s Laboratories. 
Essential Job Functions
  • Updating and maintaining laboratory hydraulic power units and various test fixtures including all documentation related to these items.
  • All aspects of safety in the laboratory, accountability of tools, equipment, and housekeeping.
  • Make decisions, work with minimal supervision both individually and in a team environment.
  • Utilize excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, vendors and external customers.
  • Manage all laboratory equipment.
  • Train new student employees on use and safety involved with high pressure and high horsepower equipment.
  • Supervise current student employees as assigned.
  • Maintain laboratory accountability security of all tools and other inventoried equipment.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform, update, and maintain Laboratory Test Procedures.
  • Communicate test status/progress with customers.
  • Maintain inventory of expendable supplies.
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections of FPI laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Perform other essential and related peripheral duties as may be assigned, i.e. are present for open houses, seminars, meetings with external customers.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to the academic departments and student projects when necessary.
  • Operate forklift in warehouse environment and operate cargo van in urban environment.
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.Qualifications
  • Requires a Certificate or Associate’s Degree in a fluid power, machine maintenance or electrical systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a Fluid Power Specialist is preferred.
  • Certification in Hazardous Waste Operations is preferred.
  • Trained in workplace safety operations.
  • Experience with control systems, data acquisition, and instrumentation pertaining to engineering validation tests. Having knowledge of hydraulic circuits and components a plus.
  • Must have knowledge of industrial three-phase electricity, electrical switch-gear, electrical-electronics.
  • Must have working knowledge of personal computer (Microsoft Word, Excel, AutoCAD, Solidworks, and Outlook programs).
  • Must be able to prepare technical documents, i.e. test reports, schematics and test procedures.
  • Must have knowledge of material purchasing, manufacturing processes, and fabrication techniques.
  • Must have knowledge of industrial laboratory safety procedures and OSHA standards.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before others. Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form.
  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be organized, detail oriented, and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and ability to prioritize projects to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills to work well with MSOE faculty, staff, administration, and students as well as individuals from business and industry.
Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is largely sedentary, the ability to move is required. The employee is occasionally required to traverse within their work area as well as other areas on campus.
  • Must be able to routinely lift a minimum weight of 40 pounds without assistance.
  • Overnight travel will be occasionally required to customer locations.

  • This job operates in a professional office environment, in an industrial laboratory, industrial manufacturing environment, and also in all-weather outdoor environment.
  • This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets; many types of engineering test and measure equipment; and industrial power equipment such as hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical.
